Religious Italy
Rome and the Vatican City : the spiritual capital for all the Catholics
around the world. The St. Peter’s Basilica, built on the site
where St. Peter was martyred, is unsurpassed in beauty and pilgrims
come from around the world to visit it, the greatest of the world’s
churches.
The visit to the Vatican Museums is also a must : the Tapestry Gallery,
the Raphael Rooms and the most overwhelming Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s
Masterpiece, restored mural of the Last Judgment.
Furthermore it is possible to attend the weekly Papal Audience or
Blessing given by His Holiness Pope Benedicy XVI.But a religious journey
to Italy is not only for visiting Rome and the Vatican City
Here following you’ll find some of the are other places.
Assisi
Despite
the millions of tourists and pilgrims it attracts every year, Assisi
remains a quiet refuge and retain its medieval hill-town charm.
It is the birthplace of St. Francis (San Francesco), Italy’s premier
saint.
St. Francis was born here in 1182. He founded the order of the Franciscans
and his message was disarmingly simple: throw out the materialistic
trappings of daily life and return to a love of Good rooted in poverty,
chastity and obedience.
The Basilica of St. Francis comprising two churches, one built on the
top of the other, suffered extensively for the earthquakes of 1997,
but after several years of intense international support and dedicated
work, both have been restored.
In the crypt of the Basilica of St. Chiara, there is the incorrupt body
of this saint, who at the age of 17 founded the Order of Poor Clares,
the female wing of the Franciscan. St.Clare is also the saint patron
of television.
To be visited also the Sanctuary of San Damiano and the Basilica of
Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Loreto
Thousands
of Catholic pilgrims travel here every year, because they believe that
angels transferred the house of the Virgin Mary from Palestine to this
spot. The “Madonna of Loreto” is considered the patron of
the aviators. Inside the Basilica you can see the House in which Jesus
grew to manhood, and in which the Holy Family lived.
Padua
The
city is located only 37 km west of Venice. The majestic Basilica of
St.Antony is an important place of pilgrimages and houses its tomb.
His tongue and the vocal cords were discovered incorrup and are preserved
here. The saint’s tomb is bedecked by requests for his intercession
to cure illnes and thanks for having done so.
The sculptures and reliefs of the high altar are by Donatello, master
sculptor of the Renaissance.
San Giovanni Rotondo
Located in south Italy, is a modern
centre for pilgrimage as here lived Padre Pio, a Capuccino priest dead
in 1968 and recently nominated Saint by the Pope. Pio received the stigmata
on his hands and made a lot of miracles. About eight millions pilgrims
pass through here every year, making it the most visited pilgrimage
site in the world after Lourdes.
