Assisi

assisiDespite the millions of tourists and pilgrims it attracts every year, Assisi remains a quiet refuge and retain its medieval hill-town charm.
It is the birthplace of St. Francis (San Francesco), Italy’s premier saint.
St. Francis was born here in 1182. He founded the order of the Franciscans and his message was disarmingly simple: throw out the materialistic trappings of daily life and return to a love of Good rooted in poverty, chastity and obedience.
The Basilica of St. Francis comprising two churches, one built on the top of the other, suffered extensively for the earthquakes of 1997, but after several years of intense international support and dedicated work, both have been restored.
In the crypt of the Basilica of St. Chiara, there is the incorrupt body of this saint, who at the age of 17 founded the Order of Poor Clares, the female wing of the Franciscan. St.Clare is also the saint patron of television.
To be visited also the Sanctuary of San Damiano and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
